Setting: the kitchen in the morning. Steel cut oats have cooked overnight in the crockpot. Matt has already eaten his breakfast. Emma wanders in from the other room where she has been looking at books
Emma (in a plaintive voice): Daddy, I’m hungry…
Matt: Well, how about some cereal.
Emma: No…I’d rather have an egg.
Matt: I think you should have some of this cereal. I had some and it’s really good.
Emma: No, I’d rather have an egg. Mommy always gets me what I want…
Matt: Well, maybe you should wait until Mommy gets up and she can fix you an egg.
Emma: Ok
Matt: Maybe you’d like to eat some cereal for a snack before Mommy gets up?
Emma (in an excited voice): OK!

Yeah, it helps to develop subtle skills like this as a parent.

And who says you don’t need real life skills to be a parent? This would earn you top dollar as a negotiator! I love it.
