The world’s slowest electrician’s apprentice
Yup, that’s me. Not only can I pull wire and make pigtails, I can also wire light switches and electrical outlets. I still haven’t installed a light, but perhaps that will be coming before too long. You should have seen me today installing electrical outlets - if only I hadn’t left the camera up at the house where we’re living! I was sitting on the floor in the hearth room, wiring an outlet with Nathan playing with cardboard next to me, Emma and Gregory eagerly watching over my shoulder, and a cat purring on my lap. No wonder I’m so slow!
After Matt showed me how to wire an outlet yesterday he commented, “now aren’t you glad you have a husband who shows you how to do things?” and I answered, “well, most of the time…” thinking of how Almanzo Wilder built the house for his soon to be bride (Yes, I recently read These Happy Golden Years) and how wonderful it was for Laura to walk into this brand new completed house with her tablecloth already spread on the table and a stocked pantry awaiting her cooking skills. But then again, she was moving into a house with a front room, a bedroom, a small pantry and a cooking lean-to off the back with a wood cookstove in it - a far cry from our new house with electricity and three bathrooms!
So while I do occasionally wish that someone else would just do it all for me (and really, who doesn’t feel like that sometimes?) I am very glad I have a husband who will show me how to do stuff like wire electrical outlets and use all sorts of handy things like a chainsaw, skilsaw, nailgun, and various other useful and dangerous tools.
